"...... getting stuck in a certain idea or even lost for a few days."
This I wrote on the 22nd of January after the German Championships and did not know that I wasn't referring to the past but to the next two months ahead of us!
During that time I was working on a completely new presentation of our competition number that would have played in a court room. New magic effects were added and it was the 30th of March when we were driving to our coach Gaston Florin in Bavaria, who himself is a world champion of magic and an excellent actor to rehearse our act with. I proudly presented him my new script.
He reads it silently, looks up and says, "No , the original concept was much better." Oomph... Now what? I admit that it took a fair amount of internal conquest and a few hours of persuasion but ultimately his arguments or better said explanations consistent and correct. A good coach does not tell you exactly what you want to hear, but the truth. So I gave up the courtroom version. However, the original version was no longer satisfying for me either. So back again to the starting line and creating something completely new ? One month prior to the Austrian Championships ? Of course ! What else ? In the 5 hours on the highway back to Vienna, the basic concept was born and the next morning it started again from the beginning. New page, new luck.
At least we didn't have to start at zero again completely, because the new effects are good and match the current version. However, the methods and presentation are often intertwined especially in mental magic. It's like a Rubik's Cube: One side is the presentation , another one the technique , the next one represents the dramaturgy of effects, clarity , etc. As soon as one side has been completed, the others are in disorder again. Until last weekend we were working on the structure and on the last day before the competition we worked with colleagues at the convention one the subtleties of presentation. Thank you all at this point!
On the day of the competition itself we had been practicing the act backstage and half an hour before the showfor the first time I was absolutely certain about the text. The performance itself was frankly nothing more than mother rehearsal in public. It turned out like it had tot urn out. The audience members were selected by the jury only after about one minute. We should have showed the first effect with them already after 50 seconds.
Then a few minor technical errors occurred and the time was already running out of control. The last 1.5 minutes and the fantastic final effect we could not even show ! The red light signals after 12 minutes, that one must end immediately. One is not allowed to show a further effect, otherwise one would be disqualified.
Immediately after leaving the stage I was extremely disappointed, especially since we never went over 10 minutes at the rehearsals. A problem with the I would have never expected. During the performance on stage time simply flew by !
Surprisingly, this was the feedback of one of the jurors the next day : "I was so caught up with the presentation that I could not believe how quickly time passed and this rarely happens to me " Also from many others we received consistently very positive feedback. And slowly I began to realize that no one knew that another effect had to be left out. Of course, our play was still unpolished and some jurors noticed that. Quite in contrast to excellent colleagues, whose performances were unchanged for years and therefore presented brilliantly. But apparently I had underestimated our impact on the jury and audience.
Finally we were only 4 out of 381 points ahead and voted Austrian Champion and I have no doubt about it: it was also quite lucky . Luck, we didn't have in Germany in January. But that's the nature of competitions.
What "saved " us was for sure the strong method for which we also received a special award for a substantial improvement of a magical principle, the absolute fairness of our show and Anca's acting talent . She instinctively manages to create a believable atmosphere of mind reading, she is the ideal cast for this role !
Of course we are very happy about the title. But even more, we are pleased that we have finally found a demonstration, that (not only) we are very confident about and which we can perfect from now on. The next step will be to shorten it down to 10 minutes. This is the time-out at the World Championships as well as the next test in Switzerland at the Swiss Championships on 13th of June. Until then, there is still some way to go . But again we have received a lot of constructive feedback from colleagues and judges and know what we can do in order to show our final effect next time. We are very confident of taking the next a big step in the coming weeks. Motivated we are for sure. And then there is still our excellent coach !
